FAQ
US9001
1. What is a Standard Cabinet?

A US9001 Standard Cabinet is simply just that, a cabinet that houses the UPS Power Modules.  Since, the UPS power modules contain all of the necessary electronics to produce conditioned power,  the only responsibility the cabinet has is providing the communications link between each UPS power module and monitoring of the input and output voltage and frequency parameters.

The Standard Cabinets are available in 10 sizes:

  • 2 slot 230V/50Hz
  • 3 slot 230V/50Hz
  • 4 slot 230V/50Hz
  • 6 slot 230V/50Hz
  • 9 slot 230V/50Hz
  • 9 slot 400V/50Hz, 230V/50Hz
  • 9 slot 400V/50Hz, 400V/50Hz
  • 12 slot 230V/50Hz
  • 12 slot 400V/50Hz, 230V/50Hz
  • 12 slot 400V/50Hz, 400V/50Hz
2. What is a N+1 Parallel Redundant UPS?

It is a known fact that UPS systems can fail.  When a failure occurs in a legacy UPS, at best, the load will continue to be supported by unprotected utility power.  Leaving your mission critical equipment vulnerable to the power grid.  N + 1 means placing one more 1kVA UPS power module in the system than required to support the load.  The end result is a UPS for your UPS.

With PowerKinetics' US9001 UPS system, parallel redundancy simply means that one UPS power module is held in reserve in the event of a failure.  For example, if the load requirement is 5kVA, then a 6-slot cabinet should be fully populated with six 1kVA UPS power modules.  In the event of a failure, the system would immediately redistribute the load among the remaining UPS power modules.  Using the N+1 sizing allows the system to function normally even if one UPS power module has failed or has been removed for maintenance.  Because of modular, parallel redundant technology, PowerKinetics offers you one of the most reliable UPS systems in the world.

3. What is a hot swappable UPS?

A hot-swappable UPS is one that can be added to or removed from cabinet for service while the system is providing conditioned power to the load.  In a hot-swappable UPS,  the load does not have to be placed on unprotected system bypass as with other UPS's.  PowerKinetics' US9001 UPS power modules can be hot swapped at any time without placing the mission critical load on unprotected system bypass.

4. What is a fault tolerant UPS?

Fault tolerance is the ability of the UPS system to continue supplying conditioned power to the load both during and after a failure has occurred.  Due to the parallel redundancy of PowerKinetics' US9001, this is now possible.

5. What is a modular UPS?

A modular UPS is one that can grow with the changing demands of the data center environment.  Because the Parallel Redundant US9001 has hot-swappable UPS power modules, the load capacity of the UPS system can be scaled up or down. By simply adding or removing UPS power modules from the Standard Cabinet while the conditioned UPS power is being supplied to the load does this.

6. How can the US9001 reduce my spare parts inventory, decrease maintenance time and cost and increase system uptime?

The only spare part required for the US9001 system is a UPS, a UPS power module that is.  Since, a UPS power module is a stand alone UPS,  your spare part can be used to support a less critical device, or better yet, place into the Standard Cabinet increasing the redundancy of the UPS, N+X.

Maintenance time and cost is reduced because the UPS power modules are hot-swappable.  The UPS power module that requires service can be taken out of the Standard Cabinet and serviced on site by a factory trained technician or sent to the factory for service.

Since, the parallel redundant UPS power modules are hot-swappable,  all service is performed while the system in on line supporting the mission critical load.

7. How do I dispose of my batteries in US9001 Module when the time comes?

The US9001, like most UPS depends on rechargeable lead acid batteries to supply the backup power. When it comes to disposal, these batteries are subject to important federal regulations. Because of the lead content, these batteries must be removed from the UPS and recycled. Please refer to local authority and codes for batteries disposal.

8. How is the US9001 different from other parallel redundant systems?

To answer that question it is necessary to look at parallel redundant, hot-swappable, modularity and fault tolerance.

  • Parallel Redundant

  • Other manufacturers do have true parallel redundant systems.  However, they often require as many as 3 components to achieve a parallel redundant state.  PowerKinetics achieves parallel redundancy by simply adding one additional UPS power module.
  • Hot-swappable

  • Other manufacturers have hot-swappable batteries or hot swappable inverter sections.  However, these sections are typically heavy and require at least two people to remove any one section.  In addition, some systems require the load be placed on unprotected bypass before service work can be done.
  • Modularity

  • Other manufacturers do have modular components such as battery, power train and control sections.  However, they typically are not parallel redundant and hot swappable.  Those that do, have components that are heavy and bulky or power trains that have such high power handling capabilities that it makes scaling difficult.  This can result in a grossly over sized UPS.  Since PowerKinetics uses 1kVA UPS power modules which weigh 16 kg., the system can be scaled easily by one person and can be sized to closely match the requirements of the load.
  • Fault Tolerance

  • Other manufacturers idea of fault tolerance is using unprotect system bypass.  This leaves your system vulnerable to the power grid.  The reason you are purchasing a UPS is to protect your mission critical equipment from the power grid and environmental disturbances.  Why spend thousands of dollars on UPS equipment only to rely upon the power grid for system bypass.  The power grid is the very thing you are trying to protect your equipment from.

9. What input and output configurations are available?

PowerKinetics offers input and output configurations of:

  • 230V/50Hz
  • 400V/230V/50Hz
  • 400V/400V/50Hz
10. Is the US9001 CE approved?

The US9001 Standard Cabinet and UPS Power Modules are both CE and UL1778 approved.

11. How does the US9001 Standard Cabinet communicate with the computer?

The US9001 Standard Cabinets provide both serial communication.  RS-232 (Serial) communication provides a greater level of detail and data between the UPS and computer.  For example, serial communication allows data regarding input and output voltages, percent load, and UPS operational status so administrators may establish proper UPS power management.
